Skating Polly - Little Girl Blue and The Battle Envy (Official Video)

My god I love those blue docs!!!!

Skating Polly on Wiki

Skating Polly is an American rock band formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States, in 2009. The band was founded by multi-instrumentalist step-siblings Kelli Drew Mayo (born March 29, 2000)[1] and Peyton Mckenna Bighorse (born July 11, 1995),[2] who were 9 and 14 years old respectively. Kelli's brother Kurtis Lee Mayo eventually joined the band to play the drums so that Peyton and Kelli could focus on guitar and bass respectively. The band is noted for their alternating instruments among each member, poetic lyrics, intense live shows, melodic arrangements, and an eclectic array of songs that vary in style from riot grrrl to grunge to piano-based indie pop. Big Joanie - Fall Asleep

Big Joanie - How Could You Love Me?

Women of Color have always had a place in punk. Big Joanie is here to remind you of that

Big Joanie is the sort of band you get to a show early for. In the past three years, the London-based group has self-released three rough-hewn EPs on their own imprint, Sistah Punk, each one featuring songs that blend tangling post-punk guitar lines, spit-shined hooks, and a “sprinkling,” Chardine says, of black liberation politics. Their most recent EP’s knotty title track, “Crooked Room,” took inspiration from a lecture by Seattle-born writer Melissa Harris-Perry, who compared life as a black woman in a white patriarchy to trying to find a true vertical in a room where all the angles are out of whack. “That’s exactly what it is,” Steph Phillips, Big Joanie’s lead vocalist and guitarist, says when we meet in a cozy cafe near South London’s Caribbean Brixton Market. “[Society] distorts the world around us to try and make us see things not as they are, or to try and make us fail.”

...
On stage, Steph has a serene focus and a deep, assured singing voice. But she admits to a natural reserve, explaining that she lived vicariously through the riot grrrl music she devoured as a teenager in the middle England town of Wolverhampton. “As a very shy person, I loved hearing someone else stand up for themselves,” she says. A couple of hours away across the Midlands, the outgoing, quick-to-laugh Chardine grew up nurturing a love for Nirvana in Kettering, the town “where all the fucking government parties do their research for middle England.” In London, bassist Estella Adeyeri was listening to British alternative radio station XFM — “back when it wasn’t just blokey music,” she says.  All-female tribute bands.  Because one night in Montréal, there was this band in the usual grubby bar, fronted by a woman with what was probably an OK voice but it sounded amazing that night, doing covers of the Stones and Zeppelin.  (Early '70s, what can I tell you?)  Most tribute bands (that I've seen) tend to replicate the personnel of the original band being honored, so dispensing with that might be very neat.

Also, I don't think "traditional" fandom only embraced wanting to be a groupie, but you know, nobody has ever asked, have they?

In that this mostly refers to jazz musicians, but The Girls in the Band is worth your time and attention.  Interviews and stories from women who played brass and wood winds, who composed and arranged, who were faced with, well, the same crap women get faced with.

Some things have changed a little.

Note:  There's an assertion that rock 'n' roll killed big band music.  Historically, the big bands were largely done in by post-WWII economics and ASCAP/BMI royalty issues, and the direction jazz took toward "cool" jazz, which worked better with smaller ensembles.  Rock was just the last nail.

As I have noted about three times now, Harper's, the magazine for people who read, think, and do cryptic crosswords, presents its subscriber-only articles as .pdfs that refuse to allow highlight-and-paste, which means that the article which I found interesting (or weird, depending) is not going to get discussed, not that this was the appropriate space for that discussion, just that it explains my annoyed retreat to The New Yorker's website and the non-blocked short piece on Bikini Kill and the Riot Grrrl movement.
Hanna is one of America’s greatest living rock performers. If you’re pressed for time, start with the 1998 compilation “Singles,” though the first EP—included in the reissue—is one of the most durable punk records of the early nineties. Built from basic chording, it has a clenched, even beat and Hanna’s clutch of vocal personae: victim, abuser, avenging angel. Recorded mostly in single takes and without overdubs, the EP lasts only sixteen minutes.

女王蜂 / デスコ Queen Bee - Die For Disco

PEOPLE. The lead singer Avu-chan, is a transwoman. She and her sister Ruri-chan, the drummer, are of African American and Japanese descent. They punk and glamrock it up like none other. THEY ARE EPIC!!! Now the other members. They had a guitarist, Gigi-chan, who unfortunately hurt her hand and had to leave the band. Their bassist is Yashi-chan? At least thats what Google Translate gave me when I checked their Wiki, which is in Japanese. This knowing only one language thing is the suck. One thing that doth piss off at lot of people tho is that sometimes in their videos, Ava-chan and Luli-chan are whitewashed. Like in the official video for Die for Disco.

But a couple are less, issuematic:

Violence Girl: East L.A. Rage to Hollywood Stage, a Chicana Punk Story [Paperback]. Get it now!

Q&A: L.A. Punk Rocker Alice Bag on Life as a Chicana Rebel and Violence Girl, her new book.

Punk literature is often given to tiresome romanticizing and rehashed clichés, but Alice Bag's recent autobiography, Violence Girl, offers a poignant, personal story from the unique perspective of a poor Hispanic woman raised in East LA. The book focuses on Bag grappling with her Chicana identity and feminist politics while fronting her seminal 1970's punk band, The Bags. In the radical punk scene of late-70's Hollywood, she found the strength to reconcile a tumultuous relationship with her abusive father and acquired skills that propelled her pursuit of political activism and teaching later in life. In this interview, Alice reflects on her early experience with punk and glam rock and analyzes the role of her book and persona in the larger feminist and Chicano movement. In the Bay Area this week, Bag will be reading and performing short acoustic sets: Jan. 11, San Francisco Public Library, Main Branch; Jan. 12: Amoeba Music, Berkeley; Jan. 13: 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, Oakland.

How has the book tour been going?
It's been great. My publisher is very small, so I book all my readings, do the networking and even have to buy my own books and then resell them to stores where I'm reading. The feedback I receive is really what keeps me going. It encourages me to book another show and drive across the country to some place I've never been before and sleep on somebody's couch so that I can read in front of strangers.

Meet the femme fatales of General Luna

Introducing General Luna - five individual talents who have come together to give the male-dominated band scene a genuinely good n' hard kick in the butt: vocalist Nicole Asensio, guitarists Caren Mangaran and Audry Dionisio, bassist Alexis Montemayor and drummer Bea Lao are five seriously gifted and drifted individuals who have both the looks and skills that kill.

Though the individuals that make up this musical quintet are no strangers to the local band scene - vocalist Nicole formerly fronting Red Horse Beer Muziklaban finalist Crowjane, guitarist Caren being the lead vocalist and guitarist of power metal group Sanctus and Audry having sessioned with various local rock bands with her involvement in organizations like Fly High Productions and RockEd, bassist Alexis having played for local group Blush and drummer Bea Lao having wowed legends like Wally Gonzales with her impressive background under the tutelage of greats like Mar Dizon and Jun Regalado (not to mention has done a few drum clinics...), it seems almost unfair for their male contemporaries and counterparts that this "female first five" hone their chops together to create a sound that is sure to dominate both the airwaves and the live circuit. No doubt all eyes will be on them, and with the band's characteristic merging of classic rock riffage reminiscent of classic Pinoy Rock acts, and a driving rhythm section that's obviously young in its dynamic complexity, with a beat ala Tool's Danny Carey, yet also in respectful homage to the traditional rock grooves of John Bonham, audiences will hear that they are the real deal. It might be saying a lot, but trust us- these girls deliver more than a punch; it's definitely a rock n' roll wallop!MORE

Apparently they were accused of being too pretty to play. Because the fact that they look good is entirely their problem doncha know, instead of whatever reaction to their beauty that society has. In any case, has anyone ever yelled at guys for being too pretty to have bands? And I am sure if they were not societally approved in terms of looks, they'd be screamed at for being ugly. I swear!

Voodoo Queens "Indian Filmstar"

Wikipedia sez: Voodoo Queens

The Voodoo Queens were a North London-based girl group, who reached number one in the Indie Charts in 1993.
The band composed of Anjali Bhatia (guitar, vocals), Ella Guru (guitar, backing vocals), Stefania Lucchesini (drums), Rajni Bhatia (keyboards) and Anjula Bhasker (bass).[1] Rebecca Lunn later stepped in for Anjula who had to leave to visit family in India.[2]
In late 1992, Anjali left the group Mambo Taxi where she was the drummer to start the Voodoo Queens, along with her sister Rajni and cousin Anjula, Ella Guru (of Mambo Taxi), and drummer Sunny.[3]MORE

They are playing at SXSW this year

ZUKUNASISTERS is a Japanese female soul band consisting of four classmates in university: emi, spicy-marico, 238 and Akane. Having been strongly influenced by black music, ZUKUNASISTERS’ music is a blend of 60’s to 70’s R&B, soul, and gospel. The band’s unique groove and dramatic chorus work is indeed the product of members’ chemistry. Emi’s singing which is often referred to as Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, and the band’s tireless energy and vibes inflame and thrill the audience – the performance you will never forget. In 2005 the band signed with UK Project and released “GOTiSOUL”. In 2007 the band began a bimonthly one-man live show at Shibuya BYG. The show has been taken place at Shimokitazawa CLUB QUE since 2009. ZUKUNASISTERS has appeared in a number of Japanese music festivals including FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL (2006, 2009), SUNSET LIVE (2006), ARABAKI ROCK FESTIVAL (2009), EARTHDAY TOKYO (2009), MINAMI WHEEL (2008, 2009), and MANGETSU-SAI (from 2006 to 2008, 2010). In 2011 the four girls fully prepared for the upcoming US tour, decided on calling themselves “ZUKUNASISTERS” to identify themselves in overseas markets, while keeping “ZUKUNASI” strictly for the Japanese market. Believing in the power of music, ZUKUNASISTERS keeps on creating compelling melodies and great beats. Real soul music & women’s power at its best yet, ZUKUNASISTERS is bound to be a central figure in the music scene of the new decade.MORE

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir I'd been learning to do that for about three classes without realizing it, and today my drum teach was like, I think you are ready to play along to the radio now and I did! I mean, I made mistakes and all but I held on the to the beat of the song for the most part until our dear drummer started mixing it up! Let me tell you, my smile is big and round and and will. not. quit.

:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

So when I went looking for Memphis Minnie, Led Zeppelin popped up, cause they have covered and were influenced by some of her songs. And with them came up the Zepparellas, an all women cover band. So have another song and an interview:
