Meet the femme fatales of General Luna

Introducing General Luna - five individual talents who have come together to give the male-dominated band scene a genuinely good n' hard kick in the butt: vocalist Nicole Asensio, guitarists Caren Mangaran and Audry Dionisio, bassist Alexis Montemayor and drummer Bea Lao are five seriously gifted and drifted individuals who have both the looks and skills that kill.

Though the individuals that make up this musical quintet are no strangers to the local band scene - vocalist Nicole formerly fronting Red Horse Beer Muziklaban finalist Crowjane, guitarist Caren being the lead vocalist and guitarist of power metal group Sanctus and Audry having sessioned with various local rock bands with her involvement in organizations like Fly High Productions and RockEd, bassist Alexis having played for local group Blush and drummer Bea Lao having wowed legends like Wally Gonzales with her impressive background under the tutelage of greats like Mar Dizon and Jun Regalado (not to mention has done a few drum clinics...), it seems almost unfair for their male contemporaries and counterparts that this "female first five" hone their chops together to create a sound that is sure to dominate both the airwaves and the live circuit. No doubt all eyes will be on them, and with the band's characteristic merging of classic rock riffage reminiscent of classic Pinoy Rock acts, and a driving rhythm section that's obviously young in its dynamic complexity, with a beat ala Tool's Danny Carey, yet also in respectful homage to the traditional rock grooves of John Bonham, audiences will hear that they are the real deal. It might be saying a lot, but trust us- these girls deliver more than a punch; it's definitely a rock n' roll wallop!MORE

Q&A: General Luna

Apparently they were accused of being too pretty to play. Because the fact that they look good is entirely their problem doncha know, instead of whatever reaction to their beauty that society has. In any case, has anyone ever yelled at guys for being too pretty to have bands? And I am sure if they were not societally approved in terms of looks, they'd be screamed at for being ugly. I swear!

Until recently I'd had the impression that Riot Girrls were a strictly white phenomenom. Apparently, this wasn't quite true:

Anjali Bhatia - Lead Guitar, Ella Guru - Guitar and backing vocals (later replaced by Mary Deigan on Bass), Stefania Lucchesini - Drums, Rajni Bhatia - Keyboards, Anjula Bhasker - Bass (later replaced by Rebecca Lunn)

Voodoo Queens - Kenuwee Head

Voodoo Queens - Supermodel superficial

Voodoo Queens "Indian Filmstar"

Wikipedia sez: Voodoo Queens

The Voodoo Queens were a North London-based girl group, who reached number one in the Indie Charts in 1993.
The band composed of Anjali Bhatia (guitar, vocals), Ella Guru (guitar, backing vocals), Stefania Lucchesini (drums), Rajni Bhatia (keyboards) and Anjula Bhasker (bass).[1] Rebecca Lunn later stepped in for Anjula who had to leave to visit family in India.[2]
In late 1992, Anjali left the group Mambo Taxi where she was the drummer to start the Voodoo Queens, along with her sister Rajni and cousin Anjula, Ella Guru (of Mambo Taxi), and drummer Sunny.[3]MORE

Pg 78 of Brimful of Asia negotiating ethnicity in the UK music scene talks about UK music press's response to the Asian members ethnicity.

Here's a review of some of their albums Binging On the Voodoo Queens at Grrrl Sounds Blog

Last Fm has a list of their EPs and LPs:
Chocolate Revenge, F is for Fame, Peel Sessions and Pabulum

Anjali Bhatia (drummer) is now making electronic dance music.

Ella Guru (lead guitarist) is now an artist.

They were both in the group Mambo Taxi though Bhatia left in 1992 and Ella in 1993.

Here's a taste of Mambo Taxi from a song released in 1993.

JJX (Joe Jordan's Experiment) - War

Joe Jordan's Experiment - Dont Piss on Me/Cult of Personality Utah Arts Festival

Yes kids. The drummer is the lead vocalist and guitarist's MOTHER, Jacqui Gore. Who sez Mamas can't RAWK!!!!

Mother Do You Wanna Bang Heads With Me?Joe Jordan and his mom, Jacqui Gore, are the loudest family in town.

It's not readily apparent to audiences who've witnessed the screech and burn of JJX in person — at spots like Doc Watson's, The Balcony and Tritone — that the diminutive Gore is quite a bit older than the rest of the group.

Which is to say she doesn't look 57. Gore's face is unlined and she carries herself like a confident teen when she walks. She's doesn't hit the skins or bust grooves like she's 57 (not that 57 is old for a musician). Gore swings, kicks and slams like a thrash-fancying skate-punk who just bought her first Mandrill album. Sure, her theatrical use of a cigarette holder when she smokes is unusual, but it gives off an air of breezy sophistication rather than age.

On the phone, Jordan recalls the occasional stare at the occasional gig, somebody in the audience trying to figure out Gore's story — her age, her connection to this pack of pile-driving rockers. "That's a 57-year-old woman up there — whoa!" he laughs. "Banging the drums with precision and doing her thing."

Then he reiterates in a mock-operatic tone his nightly introductions. "Ladies and gentlemen — my mom," says Jordan, reliving that ritual moment with stagy brio. "She was 33 when she had me — how's she doing?"

He's done that intro countless times. The reaction's always the same. "The crowd goes nuts," he says.

That's been the case since the pair joined musical forces in 1999, in Jordan's balls-to-the-wall metal band, Concrete Method. Back then he prowled the stage shirtless, screaming bloody murder, thrashing on his guitar while his mother bashed about on drums.

"She rocks," says Jordan matter-of-factly. "I mean, she always played — blues, funk acts, jazz bands. You name it, she's played it. And I was almost always with her. But we figured all this out on the day that I came home from high school to hear her jamming to my copy of Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power."

"Hell, yeah, I told him right there how much I liked Pantera," says Gore.

Hell, yeah.MORE

You won't see much of her in this one till about 2:45, but you can sure as hell HEAR her!

[community profile] three_weeks_for_dw is a period of time in which we post stuff only to dreamwidth in an effort to celebrate Dreamwidth anniversary and up our content. It started last year and was a great success and so the fest is starting up again this year from April 25th to May 15th!

I would love for our community to join the celebrations! Got any cool women-identifying rockers you wanna highlight? Got some icons or posts or videos or art or meta or concert/other event review to drop in? How about doing it then?

And here are some banners and icons with which to celebrate. Does anyone feel like making a banner and or some icons for our comm?
