Video of the Week: Trend by Josefin Winther

Josefin Winther is a Norwegian queer rock artist who has been in the music industry for a few years now, although she already wrote her first song at the age of thirteen. Trend is the second single from her forthcoming album, Raising Armies, which is scheduled for release on February 14.

The video tells the story of a boy who’s trying to find his way in various social groups and settings, but he never seems to feel comfortable enough to stay. His journey is accompanied by the song’s lyrics about listening to your ‘own tune’ instead of trying to follow a trend.MORE

Its hard as hell to find women in gothic, symphonic, progressive and similar types of metal bands that are not vocalists. we can look pretty and sing, but heaven forbid that we be instrumentalists. That's still considered a man's job. Midnattsol, a a band with German and Norweigan members who perform Norwegian folk metal band, breaks the mold with a female vocalist and a bassist. Carmen Elise Espenæs, younger sister of well respected vocalist Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull (Leaves Eyes, formerly of Theatre of Tragedy) joined forces with guitarist Chris Hector to form Midnattsol. Among the recruits to the new band was bassist Birgit Öllbrunner (who also plays in the band R.I.P.)

Norway is the home of many great musical acts but most of the women I know are vocalists, and I am kinda trying to highlight instrument playing women as well. And there I was, procrastinating as usual, when I found out that Ida Maria was not only Norweigan but played teh guitar! SCORE!!!!Wikipedia

Ida Maria - Oh my God

Flavor Wire- Killer Queen: An Interview with Ida Marie

FW: Personas are really interesting. In the US especially we’re overrun by female rockers in mini-skirts. ( my note:*RAISED EYEBROW* We are? Where? No seriously, where are the female rockers that we are overrun with, nevermind the ones in miniskirts? And NO the Pussy Cat Dolls don't fucking COUNT. And even if there was, whose fault is that? psst...check her answer to the next question*....Also, can I just say that I HATE it when women are set up to bash other women?) You’re not one of the Pussycat Dolls, but, on the other hand, a song like “Better When You’re Naked” isn’t entirely different on its face than what they do. How do you think about that type of sexuality? ( Dear USians. Get the fuck over yourselves and fix your unhealthy relationship with sex. yours truly, a fedup of the misogyny music consumer)

IM: When I wrote “Naked” that was very much a comment on all this objectification of the female body. I’ve been over to the UK a couple of times and seen the Page 3 girls with the boobs. There’s always so much hysterical media around the female naked body. I am very much interested in the male nakedness. I felt like someone needs to point that out: It’s not only guys that like to see people naked. I just wanted to clown it around, just make it very loud and clear, that I’m not necessarily the object. I’m actually the subject; I’m actually observing you.

FW: Do you worry about a tendency to paint you into a category?

IM: That’s a big issue in the music business. I’ve been fighting so many fights to be able to keep my integrity on that point. There are so many expectations, even though I’m actually a songwriter. *You can get that: “You should put more make-up on; you should wear this; you look better with you hair like that.” I’ve just gotten to the point where I don’t take any crap from anyone. I want to be part of a female league that’s actually making a bigger space for female musicians… I think a lot of girls are doing that, actually taking our space. (You GO woman!)With more or less luck; it’s a hard business, a very cold and finicky business.MORE
