As I have noted about three times now, Harper's, the magazine for people who read, think, and do cryptic crosswords, presents its subscriber-only articles as .pdfs that refuse to allow highlight-and-paste, which means that the article which I found interesting (or weird, depending) is not going to get discussed, not that this was the appropriate space for that discussion, just that it explains my annoyed retreat to The New Yorker's website and the non-blocked short piece on Bikini Kill and the Riot Grrrl movement.

Hanna is one of America’s greatest living rock performers. If you’re pressed for time, start with the 1998 compilation “Singles,” though the first EP—included in the reissue—is one of the most durable punk records of the early nineties. Built from basic chording, it has a clenched, even beat and Hanna’s clutch of vocal personae: victim, abuser, avenging angel. Recorded mostly in single takes and without overdubs, the EP lasts only sixteen minutes.

I think I gave up on KH's relevancy somewhere a decade back. Bikini Kill probably changed my life as a teenager, but I also was friendly with a lot of the Camp Trans folk when the whole Mr. Lady-MWMF debacle was occurring.

I'm a firm believer in being able to like an artist's work without liking them personally/their politics, but that was a truly souring experience.

Naturally, since I know very little about this musical period (which is why I posted, so I can pull more of this together. Someday), I took the "Mr. Lady-MWMF" to Dr. Google. Well, actually, Duck Duck Go. But anyway, one of the links was this one, explaining the situation.

Now I want to find the documentary cassettes I made in college circa 1999 and somehow get them to you.

That blogger's feelings on the situation -- the slap in the face, the grotesque disappointment and subsequent not-really-knowing-how-to-listen-to-BK for the decade after... that's almost exactly how I feel/have felt.

I could probably ramble all day about what I personally remember from what was going on then.
