So the word "Asrai" refers to a kind of aquatic fairy, apparently. In 1985, Dutch twin sisters Magriot (vocals) and Karin (drums) Moldecided to form a band, and in 1987 named it after this denizen of folklore. Several lineup changes and EPs later, they released their first album in 1997. Some more lineup and label changes later, they released their third album "Pearls in Dirt", from which the following clips are taken:

Their history is ridiculously complicated by a whole hecklaod of lineup changes, but they've always been majority women. The current lineup is Margriet on Vocals, Manon on Synths and Karin on drums.

For Bitch Magazine article:Electro Feminisms: Ladyhawke

One of the worst traditions we Australians have is claiming the most talented New Zealanders for ourselves. As an Aussie woman blogging about electronic music, I wish I could claim the wonderful Pip Brown for my native land. With her music swiping a big chunk of the 1980s, Brown fittingly named herself Ladyhawke after the 1980s Michelle Pfieffer movie. Her music is evocative retrofuturistic electropop, nostalgia without a loss. She released her first self-titled album on Australian label Modular (aha OURS!) in 2008, and it spawned several hits in Australia and the UK.

There's a lot to like about Ladyhawke; not only is her album great from start to finish, but she played four instruments on it and wrote and arranged the whole thing. Like I said in an earlier post, this isn't the only way to judge authorship and authenticity, but it's definitely impressive for a singer/songwriter
to take control of such a stylised project. In an interview an interview with The Guardian, she attributed some of her songwriting chops to her Asperger's and a childhood spent obsessively listening to The Beatles and The Pretenders.

MORE including lovely videos here

On her Myspace she describes herself thusly:

I am Ladyhawke. I'm from New Zealand. I'm a lady who loves to play. I love my guitars. Synths. Making noise. Pressing buttons. Wires. Cables. Solitude. Staring at screens. Movies. Collecting stuff.. mostly games. I love video games.MORE

One of my favourite songs by her is this, specifically for the heavy guitar-sound and the later synth sounds at the break:

I love the fact that she sings, yells, whispers and screams with equal facility. And apparently she is VERY well respected in her genre...and owns her record company. I am trying to find out what instruments she plays.

Erica Garcia was a solo artist who was nominated for a Latin Grammy for her song Vete destino in the early part of this decade. She made three albums for Universal, colloborated with several musicians and is now the Percussionist for Fools Gold

Fool’s Gold’s Erica Garcia: By Tom Tom Magazine

Tom Tom Magazine: What is your favorite percussion set-up? Why?

Erica Garcia: I’m not a real percussionist, I’m a multi-instrumentalist. My friends asked me to play percussion, so I pretty much play whatever they put it in front of me- but I don’t necessarily know the name of the things I’m playing. I definitely don’t like those things that make rain sounds, or the curtain chimes, or however you call it.

Wikipedia

They claim to hail from the planet Kero Kero. They are described as psychedelic, space rock, jazz fusion, jagged alternating vocal harmonies, sugary synthesiser pop, punk, prog, epic/atmospheric, noise-rock, wavering 3 part a capella, borderline operatic vocals, often in the space of a single song. Live performances are known to include home-made costumes, synchronised robot dancing and frog-related items. Enthusiastic supporters include Mike Patton and Jello Biafra:
eX-Girl are a beautiful example of information overload. Jagged 3 part vocal harmonies, adventurous arrangements, and songs that hook you like the sucker that you are. Take all of these treats, wrap it in an ultra-bright technicolor live show with surreal homemade costumes, and you've got the sensation of being strapped in on an out-of-control carnival ride that will leave you standing in line waiting for another turn.

One of my favourite bands, Canadian band Metric is fronted by synthesizer-using, keyboarding contralto vocalist Emily Haines. Their music is classed as indie rock and New Wave, according to the all-knowing Wikipedia. They have won at least 2 Juno's (Canadian Music Award) for their work so far, and have shown up on soundtracks to movies like Scott Pilgrim:
