An interview with Sandra Alva

In 2003, Jessica Hopper penned a piece for Punk Planet called "Emo: Where the Girls Aren't." It focused on the burgeoning genre of rock that was drawing youth to live shows; a genre of music that was becoming about a new look and a lifestyle, at least more so than it had in recent years. Emo and hardcore music was evolving as its own scene, and even though there were thousands of bands partaking in the sound, there were still so few women participating. Why? Hopper said it was because the music had become all about faceless, nameless women who were heartbreakers, bitches and all around unworthy of the men singing the songs.

Where would a girl find herself in that?

"It truly did not occur to me to start a band," Hopper writes, "until I saw other women playing music." She cited the riot grrl movement and bands like Babes in Toyland and Bikini Kill as inspiring her to pick up a bass guitar. And now that riot grrl is unfortunately a thing of the past, it's time for females to take part in this otherwise male-dominated subgenre of emo and hardcore music.

Enter Sandra Alva.

The 22-year-old drummer from Los Angeles has almost 20,000 followers on Twitter. She has fans intent on reaching her, sending her photos of them in her T-shirts, having her sign their CD covers. She also happens to be a lesbian.

Alva first became well-known as the drummer of Black Veil Brides, a metal group that performs donned in black paint. After leaving the band last fall, she joined up with Modern Day Escape, an otherwise all-male screamo group. But situated behind her drum set behind four guys, Sandra still steals the show.

"When i was about 10 years old, my cousins joined this band," Sandra told AfterEllen.com. "They practiced at my cousins house and I would always sit and watch. I thought it was so cool how they were able to make their own music, so I decided I wanted to be a musician too. I tried the guitar, the bass, but wasn't feeling it. Then I sat behind the drums, and I easily started playing beats." She said it was a hidden talent, and she kept up with her newfound love of drumming.MORE

American Meg White is know for her percussive and stripped-down drumming style, which is considered controversial in the music world because of its very simpleness.

She's really quiet and seems to have let the dude do most of the talking for the band, which means that I couldn't find an interview feat. her alone on google. Most of teh info I found her her playingh habits was garnered from Stripespedia. In this quote she takes on detractors of her drumming:

Meg White herself admits, "I appreciate other kinds of drummers who play differently, but it’s not my style or what works for this band. I get [criticism] sometimes, and I go through periods where it really bothers me. But then I think about it, and I realize that this is what is really needed for this band. And I just try to have as much fun with it as possible." She has also said, “I just know the way [Jack] plays so well at this point that I always know kind of what he’s going to do. I can always sense where he’s going with things just by the mood he’s in or the attitude or how the song is going. Once in a while, he throws me for a loop, but I can usually keep him where I want him."

Other interesting info acquired from her entry on Stripespedia: She's partially deaf in her right ear and wears a hearing aid. She used to drum barefoot or wearing socks, but now she wears shoes because barefoot druming tore up her skin. Apparently in 2007 she contracted a bad case of anxiety which led to 18 dates being cancelled, then the rest of the UK tour dates. She did recover and performed during an encore presentaion with one of Jack White's other bands in 2008. And she apparently came up with the name for the band. I would love to see an article or interview featuring her thoughts on her style of drumming. She occasionally sings:

Meg does sing lead vocals on five of the band's songs: "In the Cold, Cold Night" and "Well It's True That We Love One Another" (from Elephant), "Passive Manipulation" (from Get Behind Me Satan), "Who's a Big Baby?" (released on the "Blue Orchid" single), and "St. Andrew (This Battle is in the Air)" (from Icky Thump).

Here's "In The Cold Cold Night" in which she plays a keyboard of some sort:

'Hit So Hard' has Patty Schemel out from behind her drumset

Patty Schemel has played with some of the best bands of the last three decades. The out drummer has been on the kits for Hole, Bastard (a short-lived supergroup with Courtney Love, Louise Post and Gina Crosley), Imperial Teen and Juliette and the Licks. And luckily, she's brought a camera with her to recording sessions, backstage areas and into the studio. It was only right that she'd hand over the hours of footage to some capable friends (including director P. David Ebersole) to make a movie out of it.

JJX (Joe Jordan's Experiment) - War

Joe Jordan's Experiment - Dont Piss on Me/Cult of Personality Utah Arts Festival

Yes kids. The drummer is the lead vocalist and guitarist's MOTHER, Jacqui Gore. Who sez Mamas can't RAWK!!!!

Mother Do You Wanna Bang Heads With Me?Joe Jordan and his mom, Jacqui Gore, are the loudest family in town.

It's not readily apparent to audiences who've witnessed the screech and burn of JJX in person — at spots like Doc Watson's, The Balcony and Tritone — that the diminutive Gore is quite a bit older than the rest of the group.

Which is to say she doesn't look 57. Gore's face is unlined and she carries herself like a confident teen when she walks. She's doesn't hit the skins or bust grooves like she's 57 (not that 57 is old for a musician). Gore swings, kicks and slams like a thrash-fancying skate-punk who just bought her first Mandrill album. Sure, her theatrical use of a cigarette holder when she smokes is unusual, but it gives off an air of breezy sophistication rather than age.

On the phone, Jordan recalls the occasional stare at the occasional gig, somebody in the audience trying to figure out Gore's story — her age, her connection to this pack of pile-driving rockers. "That's a 57-year-old woman up there — whoa!" he laughs. "Banging the drums with precision and doing her thing."

Then he reiterates in a mock-operatic tone his nightly introductions. "Ladies and gentlemen — my mom," says Jordan, reliving that ritual moment with stagy brio. "She was 33 when she had me — how's she doing?"

He's done that intro countless times. The reaction's always the same. "The crowd goes nuts," he says.

That's been the case since the pair joined musical forces in 1999, in Jordan's balls-to-the-wall metal band, Concrete Method. Back then he prowled the stage shirtless, screaming bloody murder, thrashing on his guitar while his mother bashed about on drums.

"She rocks," says Jordan matter-of-factly. "I mean, she always played — blues, funk acts, jazz bands. You name it, she's played it. And I was almost always with her. But we figured all this out on the day that I came home from high school to hear her jamming to my copy of Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power."

"Hell, yeah, I told him right there how much I liked Pantera," says Gore.

Hell, yeah.MORE

Here she is in the band Palo Verde

According to Bitch Magazine:

If you like dark, pared-down, and unapologetic un-catchy music check out Palo Verde, a two-piece powerhouse of a band. Lauren K’s smashing drums and Terrica Kleinknecht distorted guitar are like a metal show that could fit in your living room. Don’t expect some pop song that will be stuck in your head. Their songs grow slowly and organically, turning into a swirling growl of psychedelic guitar and mesmerizing drumming. Streaming their songs online just barely do justice to their sound, and if you get the chance to see them live you’ll be treated to some of the most intense drumming of your life. (Don’t forget to bring your anti-face melting serum). Watch Lauren K in action here and prepare for ten minutes to come sooner than you thought (Invincible Summer’s Nicole J. Georges is in the vid too!)MORE

"Ice Cream" - New Young Pony Club

Sarah Jones is the Woman who drums for New Young Pony Club and Bat For Lashes 2009 touring band:

Feature on Female Drummers from Mike Dolbear - Sarah Jones

Have you noticed any issues with gender in the music industry?

Erm, yes! When I was playing metal I’d always get lots of big, massive men saying ‘your bands gonna be shit cos you’ve got a girl drummer’. I think it’s so funny cos they don’t realise that it makes you work harder and if they realised that they probably wouldn’t say it. But just little things like doing photo shoots with new Young Pony Club and we did an interview with Q I think it was. You do a photo shoot so you go and wear something that you like and you’re a girl, you might wear some make up. He came in and the first thing he said was ‘oh so it’s all about the clothes then’, no hi or anything, ‘it’s all about the clothes and the make up’. Well no actually, it’s a photo shoot, we are girls, this is what we do but come and see us tomorrow when we’re playing a gig and it’s not like this. It’s just so annoying that if you do wear a sparkly dress or something then it’s ‘oh you’re all about that’.

West Coast Women: An Exclusive Interview with Drummer Lauren Hess of Agent Ribbons (Sacramento, CA)

Sweet and inspiring, Lauren, 27, took some time out to chat with Tom Tom Mag about accentual drumming, “the Meg White effect” and her first drum set (“Shitty Shitty Bang Bang”) via e-mail:

Tell me a little bit about your drumming history. Didn’t you start out playing guitar in a different band? Why did you decide to pick up the drums?
Yes, I started out playing guitar when I was 12 and played guitar and bass in a few bands before Agent Ribbons. I bought a drum set from my high school band-mate Jennifer around 2000 and only played it occasionally because of space constraints. It was nicknamed “Shitty Shitty Bang Bang” and I still have a few of the pieces in my parents’ garage. I had them set up in my living room when Natalie came over and noticed the set. She asked me if I played them and I told her I most certainly did, even though I barely played at that time. But, in typical Lauren fashion, I just jumped right in without over-thinking the scenario and began playing that week!

What do you love best about the drums?
To me, drums are heavy and calculated, which are two very appealing sensibilities. I love the deep resonance drums provide as a musical instrument. The tiny bit of OCD I have is math and pattern-related, so drums fit right in with that!

You have the cutest drum set, by the way. Explain your “kit aesthetic.” (What kind of kit do you use, etc.)
Thank you! The kit is a vintage Ludwig, I don’t know much more technical info than that! The snare is a borrowed metal one because I somehow lost my other nice piccolo snare in San Francisco. The pattern on the drums reminds me of the Tiger Eye stone, all brown and gold swirl. On the kick drum, Natalie and I glued a piece of light blue lace on the front, which is now ripping and looks pretty haggard!

Noticed that I have been totes sucking much on the "highlighting women drummers" front. I do apologize bbs.

First up is an 2004 article from The Guardian which fails in some ways but I prize it because of the interviews they did with several female drummers:'Not bad - for a girl'Why is it that while female singers and guitarists (my note: Singers yes. Guitarists? I don't think so) are respected, women drummers still struggle to be taken seriously? Clare Longrigg reports

Excerpt of article )

In short, as per usual, drummer-women are slamming right up against insecure men and patriarchy-subscribing women who want to uphold the lousy status quo. Well, to hell with that. Join with me in highlighting the women who are drumming the doors down!

Lets start with Sandra Alverenga, or Sandra A. She used to be in Black Veil Brides and her work so far is on their first album: We Stitch These Wounds
