I just heard that Cynthia Robinson has died. Link to obit when I have one. ETA: It took way too long for me to remember the existence of Wikipedia, which had two links: Billboard's obit; Rolling Stone's obit.

Susan Palermo, musician.

Somewhere on one of my old computers I have archived the silly conversations we used to have.

Phoebe Snow, 'Poetry Man' Singer, Dies At 60

It wasn't long after the release of "Poetry Man," the breezy, jazzy love song that would make Phoebe Snow a star, that the singer experienced another event that would dramatically alter her life.

In 1975, she gave birth to a daughter, Valerie Rose, who was found to be severely brain-damaged. Her husband split from her soon after the baby was born. And, at a time when many disabled children were sent to institutions, Snow decided to keep her daughter at home and care for the child herself.

The decision to be Valerie's primary caretaker would lead her to abandon music for a while and enter into ill-fated business decisions in the quest to stay solvent enough to take care of Valerie.

Snow, who worked her way back into the music performing world in the 1980s and continued to perform in recent years, died on Tuesday from complications of a brain hemorrhage she suffered in January 2010, said Rick Miramontez, her longtime friend and public relations representative. She was 60.MORE

First, when I went to the NY Times website this morning, I saw that Phoebe Snow had died.  Phoebe Snow had a fine, rich voice very like butter and maple syrup, and the local radio station actually has been playing her "San Francisco Bay Blues" even though it mostly doesn't sound quite like her.  (I'm pretty sure "Poetry Man" is on YouTube somewhere, but that will be a later edit.)

Then the CBC announced that Poly Styrene had died.   She'd just released a new album, too.  (Here's the link back to the article [personal profile] the_future_modernes wrote about her for this comm.  The "O Bondage Up Yours" video is something else now, though.)

([personal profile] the_future_modernes  left a comment on my memorial posting.  I think this has taken more than five minutes, though.)

 Teena Marie, singer.

Don't know her work, didn't know she'd left Motown and sued, didn't actually know she was still around.

Rest in Peace, Arianna "Ari Up" Forster - 1962-2010

The Slits' Ari Up dies aged 48

The Slits' frontwomen Ari Up has died at the age of 48.

The singer - real name Arianna Forster - passed away yesterday (October 20).

News of her death was confirmed by the Sex Pistols and PiL frontman John Lydon, who is married to Forster's mother. He delivered the news about her death on his website.

...

Forster formed The Slits in 1976 at the age of 14. They released two albums, 1979's 'Cut' and 1981's 'Return Of The Giant Slits', before splitting up.

She later went on to release a solo album called 'Dread More Dan Dead' in 2005, among other projects, before reforming The Slits later that year.MORE

The Slits - Typical Girls

All hail Ari Up: The rhythmic, primal influence of the Slits' 'Cut.'

Suggesting that one musician or band is “more punk” than another is a fool’s game, but in the world of rebel rock, Ari Up (born Arianna Forster), who died Wednesday at age 48 after a long fight with cancer, was, through her actions and words, punk in the purest definition of the word. She followed her muse without concern for the marketplace, and steadfastly railed against the status quo, be it the testosterone-fueled fury offered by her male counterparts in the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned, or the basic expectations of what a rock band is supposed to be.

The music the Slits created was so unlike the guitar-heavy rock made by their male peers that to call it punk somehow diminishes it. It sounded so different, and, as much as "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" or "The Clash" opened up new possibilities, those landmark records followed the basic rock and roll template. According to this site on Aussie rock musicians Ruby Hunter was the first Aborginal woman to record solo in the history of Australia music.

Her Wikipedia gives slightly more information.

She was a member of the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal nationality, and often performed with her partner, Archie Roach, whom she met at the age of 16, while both were homeless teenagers.[3] She received two ARIA Award nominations, for Best Indigenous Release for Thoughts Within in 1995, and Best Blues & Roots Album for Feeling Good in 2000, respectively.

Hunter won Deadlys in 2000 for Female Artist of the Year, 2003 for Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music and 2004 for Excellence in Film & Theatrical Score. She made her acting debut in One Night the Moon. With Archie Roach and Paul Grabowsky she wrote and performed the concert "Ruby's Story", which tells her life story through song and spoken word.MORE
