At last! A bassist as well as a vocalist in a gothic, symphonic metal band!!!

Its hard as hell to find women in gothic, symphonic, progressive and similar types of metal bands that are not vocalists. we can look pretty and sing, but heaven forbid that we be instrumentalists. That's still considered a man's job. Midnattsol, a a band with German and Norweigan members who perform Norwegian folk metal band, breaks the mold with a female vocalist and a bassist. Carmen Elise Espenæs, younger sister of well respected vocalist Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull (Leaves Eyes, formerly of Theatre of Tragedy) joined forces with guitarist Chris Hector to form Midnattsol. Among the recruits to the new band was bassist Birgit Öllbrunner (who also plays in the band R.I.P.)

Sharon Janny den Adel (born 12 July 1974, in Waddinxveen, South Holland, Netherlands) is a Dutch singer and composer, best known as the lead vocalist and one of the main songwriters in the Dutch symphonic metal/rock band Within Temptation. She has performed with various bands since she was 13, including a blues rock band called Kashiro,^[1] and joined Robert Westerholt in Within Temptation in 1996

Together with her husband, Robert Westerholt, den Adel is one of the founding members of Within Temptation. She has defined their work as epic and cinematic.^[3] Her vocals play a major role in the band's sound, despite having never received formal vocal training.^[4] Sharon sings in the mezzo-soprano range but her vocal quality is light and lyric despite her range. By the way, she designs the ban's clothing, since she was actually majoring in fashion design in college when she met guitarist Robert Westerholt and they both formed the band.
