Shitty Vodou Stereotypes? BLACK FACE??!?!?!??\

FUCKKKKKK YOUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

So basically you just thought that black people shouldn't watch your music then?

Fine. Assholes.

And just as a preemptive: lol @ anyone who attempts to defend something racist with, ‘it’s art.’

An incomplete list of why that argument is flawed:

Art can be racist. We wouldn’t have a western canon, or any art canon for that matter, if we hadn’t already acknowledged that years ago. Racism doesn’t negate something from being art and art doesn’t negate something from being racist. This is not a platform worth arguing on.
Art has the power and scope to affect society in a way that nothing else does. Nothing is ever ‘just a book’ or ‘just a music video’ or ‘just a song.’ If it’s not important enough to think about, then it wasn’t important enough to be made.
Art is a decent enough gauge of what some members of society were thinking at any given time. We study art to study culture and history. Visual art in particular is not simply a presentation of one’s inner-most feelings and beliefs but a reproduction of the culture the artist lived in and, often, a reproduction of that culture’s historical viewpoints; shorthand that the artist may not have even realize they internalized.
Also, a bonus tip! This one’s on symbolism but tune in next week for the next dumb racist thing fandom does for the next installment:

Having darkness represent evil is lazy and trite, but generally acceptable. Having a dark person represent evil is lazy and trite but also racist. Having a non-black person dress up in blackface to represent evil is not only lazy, trite, and racist but also a direct continuation of the same destructive shorthand that cost people their lives and livelihood. The time in-between has not allowed for it to be less offensive or more ironic.

In fact, let’s take this opportunity to segue into a preemptive offense of my least favorite literary device: Irony. In order for irony to work, there must be two layers involved: the implied, often traditional, meaning and the literal one. MORE

Florence and the Machine

The problem? Mainstream media reinforce negativity and reinforce that people think racism is a thing of the past and “over.”
Mainstream media misrepresents voudou/voodoo often. This is why most people don’t know much about it.
And now comes the new Florence and the Machine music video. This video has a person in blackface. Seriously, strike one FatM.
Next, it utilizes voudou to get its message of the video across.
Yep, the guy in blackface is practicing voudou. By poking a doll with pins surrounded by candles.
STRIKE TWO, FatM.
What is this oh-so meaningful message which it needs to get across by misrepresenting a legitimate religion?
The “lights went out” of her relationship. And all I can gather is that the man in blackface is sticking pins in a voudou doll of the ex.
YES FLORENCE, PLEASE misrepresent religion because your relationship ended. Because that makes it more deep and meaningful so now I want to take you seriously.

Light Asylum: Looking Bright

Funchess, the Light Asylum frontwoman, drums and sings, pogoing around in a mix of black leather and new-wave neon, like a punker, harder-edged Grace Jones possessed by the sensibilities of Ian Curtis. Her voice has appeared on tracks by bands like Telepathe and TV on the Radio, but it’s with this latest project (a duo, with Bruno Coviello on synth) that she has come into her own. Light Asylum is catchy but raw, music you can lose yourself in.

Is it okay to post something just because it's happymaking? I really love this version of "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton:

This is a part of music history I know next to nothing about, but I was really thrilled when I stumbled across Big Mama Thornton, Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, and a lot of other wonderful female R&B singers on YouTube. There's a pretty good selection on there, enough to keep a n00b like me busy for quite some time following up on the similar/recommended vids. :)

to Siouxsie and the Banshees, today.

[Part 1 of the 100 Club show from this date in 1976]

[...and part 2.]

Their goal was to bore the hell out of people by screaming and playing randomly for as long as possible, but apparently people really enjoyed them, so the Banshees wound up getting bored first and wandering off after 20 minutes of screaming the Lord's Prayer and bits of pop songs.

Yup.

Here, have something more listenable from a year later. :)

BUFFALO DAUGHTER "GREAT FIVE LAKES"

Socks,Drugs, and Rock'n'roll - Buffalo Daughter

Buffalo Daughter - S.O.I.D.

Who are Buffalo Daughter?: Wikipedia

Buffalo Daughter is a Japanese rock group formed in 1993. The three main members are suGar Yoshinaga (ex-Havana Exotica) on guitar, Yumiko Ohno (ex-Havana Exotica) on bass, and Moog (later changed to MoOog) Yamamoto on turntables and graphic design. The group originally had a drummer, Chika Ogawa, but after her departure they've had no permanent drummer and have hired different people to fill in as needed. In addition, the band is well known for using a number of electronic instruments, such as the TB-303, TR-606, Minimoog, shortwaveradio, etc.

Though less well-known to most of the world than bands such as Pizzicato Five or Cibo Matto, Buffalo Daughter is considered to be the linchpin of the so-called "cut-and-paste" rock Shibuya-kei movement from Japan.[citation needed] The band had its beginnings in the early 1990s signed to independent Japanese label Cardinal. Seeking wider exposure, they continued under theBeastie Boys' now-defunct music label Grand Royal, bringing their discography up to a total of four full-length album releases, an EP, and a handful of remixes. The band's style, always a variety grab-bag of different sounds and genres, evolved slowly but surely into a more cohesive and restrained melodic style. In 2002, Buffalo Daughter released their fifth full-length effort, I, in the United States on Los Angeles-based label Emperor Norton Records.

Unfortunately, I can’t find much in the way of recent news about her. The information on her label’s website is outdated, and the link to her official site is dead. I think she’s more into the art side of things than the music now. I found this interview from 2010 on YouTube in which she mostly discusses art, which is quite interesting:

The new single from punk icon Poly Styrene, who passed away earlier this year.
" 'Ghoulish' available 8th August 2011, featuring a killer remix from Hercules & Love Affair. Second single from the critically acclaimed album "Generation Indigo". Poly Styrene took inspiration from Michael Jackson for this track and director Lauryn Siegal creates an entertaining take on it for the video that features Gaby Hoffmann."

Back to The Fall again !!

Honestly, we could run a series on "Women who have been in The Fall" -- the band have been through dozens of line-ups.

But the Brix Smith era (1983-1989) happens to be my favourite. She was the guitarist. She also had her own project called The Adult Net.

Wikipedia )

1985 Line-Up )

Brix quote from the booklet in the "Omnibus Edition" of This Nation's Saving Grace:

Cruiser's Creek was my best work ever and L.A. was my best song ever. That, for me, is the end of it. I'm most proud of those two moments.

& I'll throw in something from the period when she briefly re-joined the band in the mid-nineties: The Birthday (cover of a song by The Idle Race). Featuring Lucy Rimmer on vocals... the only Fall song that doesn't feature Mark on vocals!

Other Projects/Collaboration

Elastica covered X's The Unheard Music with Stephen Malkmus, which featured on the SubUrbia (1996) soundtrack.

Mark E. Smith appeared on How He Wrote Elastica Man (one of the better tracks on The Menace (2000) in my opinion). This post links to the previous one again.. haha. Elastica were strongly influenced by The Fall. Apparently Brett Anderson from Suede was the person who got Justine to listen to The Fall for the first time.

There's an interview in which she talks about her time as rhythm guitarist in Suede here. On the deluxe edition of Suede's first album, a very early demo of a song called Just a Girl featuring Justine appears on the bonus disc. Not rock 'n' roll at all, but lovely nonetheless!

Justine is good friends with M.I.A., who directed the video for Mad Dog, the first single from The Menace. After Elastica split, Justine helped M.I.A. write a couple of tracks on her first album Arular (2005), including Galang.

Klang )

After leaving Elastica and getting clean, Donna Matthews formed Klang with Isabel Waidner and Keisuke Hiratsuka. They released an EP called L.O.V.E. in 2003 which is punchy, repetitive and linked in with Elastica's post-punk influences. They then released an album called No Sound is Heard (2004) which is very quiet and lo-fi.

There's an interview with the band from 2004 which you can check out here

Outside My Area )
