Pink Band - Dhoom Machaao Dhoom (Disney)

Ahhh...here's the info: Dhoom Machaao Dhoom (from Wikipedia)

Dhoom Machaao Dhoom was a Hindi programme which used to air on Disney Channel India. It premiered on January 8, 2007, with a one-hour special introductory episode, which had songs by the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs winner, Sanchita Bhattacharya. She performed the song Aisa jadoo in the same episode. The story deals with Priyanka Sethi and the Pink Band, a band which she formed with her friends. The show used to air from Monday to Thursday at 9.30 p.m.(IST). As of April 2008, it has been replaced by another Hindi show called Sanya. Sanya was stopped due to poor ratings and was replaced by Kaarthika.[citation needed]MORE

The Pink Band is: Priyanka Sethi: band leader, lead singer and guitarist.
Kajal "KJ" Jain: Drummer
Malini "Malu" Sharma: Keyboardist
Ambika "Bikki" Gill: Tamborine
Sameera : Singer, songwriter, temp member of the band.

Light Asylum: Looking Bright

Funchess, the Light Asylum frontwoman, drums and sings, pogoing around in a mix of black leather and new-wave neon, like a punker, harder-edged Grace Jones possessed by the sensibilities of Ian Curtis. Her voice has appeared on tracks by bands like Telepathe and TV on the Radio, but it’s with this latest project (a duo, with Bruno Coviello on synth) that she has come into her own. Light Asylum is catchy but raw, music you can lose yourself in.

Florence Welch

2010 Interview - Florence Welch from Florence and The Machine @ the vine

When Florence Welch began creating music in the bedroom of friend and keyboardist Isabella Summers, she could've had little idea at the scale of the outcome. Florence and the Machine's debut Lungs peaked at Number. 1 on the UK charts, has appeared on the Billboard Heatseeker's chart in the US and, as of last week, had Australian audiences in a spin.

...
It’s true. How did it feel to have so many people screaming your lyrics along with you?

Really weird [laughs], but nice. Really nice. I just find sometimes it gets slightly overwhelming. What are you all doing knowing the words?! I wrote these like, two years ago inside someones bedroom.

And probably under such different circumstances?

You write these songs and you don’t even, like you’re completely in your own head space and then you see people singing along, and obviously you know, it must mean something to them? They’re translating it to their own lives and their own experiences and it’s really amazing. But to come to the other side of the world and have people singing the songs you wrote back at you it’s like, “fuck!”.

That must be bizarre.
Yeah, totally weird. It’s massive out here, I’m blown away.

Do you think that the idea of the frontwoman is still sort of a novelty in popular music?

Don’t know. I think there’s definitely been a resurgence of late of strong, female figures as musicians and I think that’s an exciting thing. But yeah, people can’t really seem to get over it, even though there have been so many amazing artists through out history, you know: Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, (they’re) two of my favourite artists, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, people like Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield. The list, it’s not a novel thing, there’s been so much and so many wonderful women artists, but I think there is something quite beguiling about the female artist.

I think maybe people still hold on to the idea of feminine vulnerability and being quite reserved, and if you see people on stage, really exposing themselves, kind of tearing everything up, then I think people find that… It’s the juxtaposition between femininity and power I think, and vulnerability and strength in female artists that I think people find really interesting.MORE

Candye Kane Bio on her website

Nominated for four National Blues Foundation Awards blues.org (Best Contemporary Blues Female 2011) starring in a sold out stage play about her life and beating down pancreatic cancer in the last two years, Kane is one tough cookie. She has performed worldwide for presidents and movie stars but her path to success was not always glamorous or easy.

Raised in a dysfunctional, blue-collar family, Candye became a teenage mother, a pin up cover girl and a punk rock, hillbilly and blues-belting anarchist by the time she was just 21 years old. Ten cds, six record labels, millions of international road miles and countless awards later, Miss Kane has proven to be a true survivor as she scrambled her way to the top of the roots music heap, creating a world renowned reputation that has spanned two decades.

Finding Refuge in the Music

Deserts Chang/Deserts Xuan pic 2

She smokes, drinks and swears, and is unlike the cutesy mass-market acts that dominate the Mando-pop industry. But it is her straightforward attitude and lack of packaging that appeal to her audience. Deserts Chang (張懸), who has been composing music since her teens, finally launched her debut album My Life Will ... at The Wall (這牆), an alternative music venue in Taipei, last weekend.

Despite having a bit of a rough edge, she inspires fans with her soothing voice, poetic lyrics and charismatic personality. Ironically, although her fan base is comprised largely of college students, especially those with artistic pretensions, Chang is a high school dropout.

"I couldn't stand the conservative restrictions in high school," Chang told the Taipei Times. "If I received a diploma based on that value system, then I would never [be able to] embrace my true colors. And I wouldn't be able to compromise with that value system."MORE

Patti Smith and the Kronos Quartet win the million-kronor Polar Prize.
The prize committee announced winners of the one million kronor ($166,000 Cdn. ) prize on Tuesday. The prize, founded by ABBA band member Stig Anderson, is traditionally shared between a pop figure and a classical artist.

Smith, 64, was an influential component of the New York City punk rock movement, beginning with her 1975 debut album Horses. She went on to become a poet, a visual artist, and, more recently, winner of the National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids.

Clare Rita Mary Maguire (born 15 September 1987) is an Irish singer-songwriter who was signed to Universal Music Group Polydor Records in 2008. She was announced on the 3 January 2011 as 5th place in the BBC Sound of 2011 list of the top 15 most promising new artists.[2] Maguire was also singled out as one of MTV's Brand New: For 2011 Acts.[3] Her voice has been compared to Stevie Nicks andAnnie Lennox.[4]

Maguire's debut album, Light After Dark, was released on 28 February 2011.

MORE

Clare Maguire is determined to dance to her own tunes

It is quite a statement to live up to, being touted as The Voice of 2011, but Clare Maguire refuses to appear fazed by the high expectations placed upon her. Instead, as she folds her tall frame into an armchair at a Soho private members' club, the 23-year-old solo artist sounds eminently grounded as she talks about the possibilities that are opening for her this year, and the hard graft that has taken her to this point. Maguire may have tottered in on designer heels – a gift from a high-end supplier hoping her star quality will rub off – but there are glimpses of the girl from Birmingham with the ambition not just to sing, but to tell her own stories.

As the tag on the adverts suggests, she is best known for the powerful set of lungs that are helping her re-invent the torch song on debut album Light After Dark, but Maguire seems inspired as much by her Celtic background. She closes her album with a tribute to that heritage in the pastiche of an Irish ballad, "This is Not the End", recorded in one take with strings and based on traditional tune "The Parting Glass". "I wrote that a week after my grandad passed away. My grandparents are my biggest icons and inspirations. I wanted a track that was for them, for Ireland and for that heritage."MORE

Hey hey so do you like girl rock bands that sing in Russian? I thought you would. Let me introduce you to Ranetki!

Ranetki came about when a music label in Russia realized there was a lot of money to be made in the teenager rock music genre and for too long independent and foreign acts had dominated the emo, angry teenager demographic in the Russosphere. Ranetki were originally:

Valeriya (Lera) Kozlova, drums, lead vocals (b. 1988)
Lena Tretyakova, bass guitar (b. 1988) - a huge soccer fan, formerly won the Russian womens' soccer championship with her team.
Natasha Schyolkova, lead guitar (b. 1990) - was a figure skater from an early age but then left the sport to pursue music.
Anna (Anya) Rudnyova, rhythm guitar, backup vocals (b. 1990) - wrote most of the band's songs.
Eugenia (Genia) Ogurtzova, keyboard (b. 1990)

They were first officially signed to their label in 2005 and in 2006 released their first album, "Ranetki", here's the cover of the album.

Their most successful single to date has been "About You" ("O Tebe"):

You will note the GIRL DRUMMER WHO IS ALSO THE LEAD SINGER, the GIRLS ACTUALLY PLAYING THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS and the Che Guevara guitar (LOL). IDK IDK they didn't make manufactured rock bands this cool when I was a kid.

moar after the jump )

Incidentally, if you're at all interested in the world of young women in a music industry largely dominated by male acts (*cough* rock music), I would strongly, highly, passionately recommend the excellent Runaways, that talks about a speicific period and industry but really is applicable to pretty much everywhere. I'll hopefully post a review of the film at some point but meanwhile let me say - IT IS AWESOME. YOU NEED TO SEE IT.
