my dad wasn't thrilled about me playing tabla ("it's for boys"), although he paid for lessons. he assumed my female teacher was not the teacher in the room, initially. it was interesting to me to note how different norms play out in different contexts; they also hadn't wanted me to play flute because it's "for boys".
