Kalafina is an all female vocal unit from Japan formed by composer Kajiura Yuki, mainly to perform the seven theme songs for the anime Kara no Kyoukai. The group debuted in January 2008 with two original members from Kajiura's FictionJunction project, Wakana and Keiko. In May 2008, two vocalists Maya and Hikaru, were chosen from an audition of 30,000 participants held by Sony Music Japan and Kajiura Yuki, and were confirmed as the final members of Kalafina. The group members' identities were originally kept secret until this point where the four member lineup was officially revealed. However in May 2009, Sony Music Japan officially posted that Maya would no longer be participating in Kalafina.

Their musical style...
All of Kalafina's songs so far are all composed by Kajiura Yuki, and most are featured in various Japanese animes. Kajiura’s style is definitely in a world of its own, featuring lyrics in a made-up language and a musical style that fuses rock, classical, and electronic elements. The highlight of Kalafina's style is their three part voice harmony, where each members can fully showcase their vocal abilities, and their on-stage fashion has gothic elements in it.
Recognitions...
Kalafina had their debut performance in the United States when they were invited together with Kajiura Yuki as guests at Anime Boston in 2009. Apart from that, the group also had their first Asia Tour in 2010 where they performed in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taiwan.
