Snippets of Cobra's music circa 1990

Cobra - an all-female rock band

Cobra is an all-female rock band from Beijing, China. The band formed in 1989, becoming the first all-female rock band in mainland China. With only one album out, they disbanded in the late 1990s. Their style was a gloomy type of blues rock with a slight touch of New Wave dreamscape. Cobra was very popular in the beginning of their career.
Group members include Yang Ying, Yu Jin, Wang Xiaofang, and Xiao Nan. They have played at CBGB in New York City.

My favourite song in this subset of rock music is...

Archenemy - We'll rise

Here's a really cool live rendition of the song :)

Apparently Ms. Gossow was not the original vocalist. She came on in 2000 replacing original (male) vocalist and co-founder of the band, Johan Liiva.

And Now for something completely different

Black chicks have been rocking since the days of Johnny Cash’s favorite singer, Sister Rosetta Tharpe (don’t believe me? Just watch her lay down some bad-ass gospel guitar). Tina Turner has always had a rock edge, and more contemporary artists like Skin from Skunk Anansie blazed a trail in the Nineties.

Res (love Golden Boys) and Fefe Dobson have carried the torch and won MTV time in more recent years. Although, it must be noted that both of those artists seem to have been dropped by their labels. Which is a real shame. Despite the lack of mainstream attention, black women are out there leading bands, writing their own songs, and making inroads all over the genre.

Miami’s Erica Sommer belts out crunk-rock as the lead singer of Raging Geisha, then tones it down singer-songwriter style with her heartfelt solo project. Chicago’s Suffrajet plays Joan Jett influenced riff-rock, and Blakk Plastick sings southern Rock and soul fueled funk.

Tamar-Kali
is the hardcore goddess of the New York scene, and Honeychild Coleman is producing Eighties-esque dub electronica. As Mercinarias deliver the Brazilian new wave, and Imani Coppola is doing some out-there, experimental, bass-heavy pop punk ish.
Even if rock music isn’t your thing, these fierce sistas deserve your attention and applause for deviating from the norm and carving their own niche. For more black rockers, check out the Black Rock Coalition and cool MySpace groups like Negroclash, and Black Rock

Felicia Lily "Fefe" Dobson (born February 28, 1985) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and model. Her self-titled debut album earned her two Juno Award nominations. Her second album, Sunday Love, was not released due to the album's singles failure to chart, and she was dropped from her record label. During production of Dobson's subsequent studio album Joy, on her manager's record label (21 Music), she was re-signed to her original major record label (Island Records). Both labels continued working on Joy, and after experiencing numerous delays, it is scheduled for release on November 22, 2010 in Canada[3] and November 30, 2010 in the United States.[3][4] Her music has been covered by other artists and featured in Film, Television, and more.

There is a definite image change and musical evolution based on the videos I've seen. But the songs are still as catchy as hell and that's all that matters to me.:)

Wikipedia

Lush were an English alternative rock band, formed in 1987 and disbanded in 1996. They were one of the first bands to attract the "shoegazing" label, later moving toward Britpop. The band formed in 1987, initially named The Baby Machines, with a line-up of Meriel Barham (vocals), Emma Anderson (guitar), Miki Berenyi (guitar), Steve Rippon (bass), and Chris Acland (drums).[1][2] Anderson and Berenyi had been friends since the early 1980s, and published the Alphabet Soup fanzine together.[2] In 1986 Anderson joined The Rover Girls as bassist and Berenyi joined The Bugs as guitarist; neither band lasted long, and in 1987 they joined Barham and Acland in The Baby Machines.[1] Rippon joined shortly thereafter, and the band members decided on a change of name to Lush, making their live debut at the Camden Falcon on March 6, 1988.[1][2] Barham was fired, with the rest of the band deciding she lacked commitment (she later joined Pale Saints). Anderson and
Berenyi then took on lead vocal duties.[1]Emma Anderson said of the band's beginnings: "We were kind of punk rock in one way. We did think 'Well, if they can do it, why the fuck can't we?' Basically, our idea was to have extremely loud guitars with much weaker vocals. And, really, the vocals were weaker due to nervousness - we'd always be going 'Turn them down! Turn them down!'"[2] Miki Berenyi said, "We started by writing crappy riot grrl anthems... which was probably charming in a juvenile way. But there was a very rapid shift from the minute we started to write for records. The music, the lyrics became much more thoughtful and expressive, more important, really. I remember that change beginning when Emma wrote "Thoughtforms," it certainly made me think I needed to get my act together."[2]MORE

I absolutely LOVE the fashion aesthetics of visual kei, and I was wondering if there were any bands out there that included women. say hello to Exist+Trace!

Website

Myspace

Wikipedia sez:

Exist Trace (often typeset as exist†trace) are a Japanese metal band of the visual kei style, and consisting entirely of female members. They're from Tokyo, Japan, and initially formed in June 2003.[1]

...

Exist Trace's music can be described as melodic death metal and vocalist Jyou growls and shouts (exhale) throughout many songs, which contributes to the dark undertone of many of the songs. Their guitar sound often features heavy distortion and technically virtuosic riffs and solos. Their sound is heavily focused on their bass and drumming, which helps define their musical style. The lyrics are mainly based on gothic themes, and their music style has resemblance to gothic metal.

Welcome to the Inaugural Monthly [community profile] rocknroll_n_blues_queens icon challenge!!!! The prompt?

"Women-identifying performers playing their instruments"

I don't know bout you, but my soul (and my icon collection) is CRYING OUT for more pictures of women playing their instruments. I am SO TIRED Of music magazines posing women with static "sexyface"  while ignoring the dramatic artistic potential for epic shots of women blasting their music all over the place. Whether they are drumming, keyboarding, guitaring, bassing, violining, harpischording, or even singing, if they are in a rock band and they are in the midst of rocking out... bring on the icons! Make them dramatic! Make them pretty! Play with filters. If you can manage to grab still shots from music videos, that would be epic!  The time frame is one month. Make a post whenever you feel like it. And there is no pressure, really. If you can't do it in a month, post whenever you are ready.  Let the iconning begin! Have fun!!!!
