The Rescues Interview: SXSW 2010

With four songwriters in the band, how are the songs composed?

England: It happens differently every time, but all of the songs are written by all four of us. We all have our hands in there at some point. Usually we just start in the room with nothing lyrically, melodically or anything, and we just sit there and start writing something from scratch, all four of us together. A few times we've had a scrap of a song brought in by two of us in the band, and then we've brought it to everyone, or maybe we finished the lyrics in pieces apart. But the balanced majority of it is written by all four of us together, and it's an amazing, amazing thing. It's also sometimes a little bit dangerous.MORE

Apparently the entire band were solo singer-songwriters before forming the band and all four of them sing and play various instruments.

Awesome cover of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream if you can get VEVO

Totally Fuzzy Reviews Let Loose the Horses

The album "Let Loose The Horses", released by Universal Republic Records, starts out with the title track. A pumping pulsing bassdrum, the perfect heartbeat for a track that starts off rather shy, in a "nice to meet you, but I don't really know what I'm doing here" sort of way, arpeggios on bass and keyboard join in and crisp female vocals will make you pay attention, slowly and very cleverly building up the track adding guitar and keyboards, the male vocals join in in a call and response game untill the track really explodes after the words "My love Let's Watch It All Burn". My earlier references to the Mamas and the Papas, Eagles, LRB etc were no coincidence, these close harmony vocals are nothing short of sublime. Or as LA Weekly called it: “Their voices take flight. Soaring and gorgeous." The structure of the song, with stops and breaks and interludes, unmistakenly reveals their experience in songwriting and arranging. This track is worthy of becoming a single. If you're thinking of making a new mixtape for those long car drives you planned for this summer, this one should be on it.

Track 2 titled "Riot", doesn't waste any time. It is a rock track driven by a tight rythm section of drums and bass, with very open layered guitars, add some short keyboard sequences, leaving a lot of space and room for more cleverly layered and processed vocal violence. The combination of 2 female and 2 male voices is really magnificently done.
